The Silent Execution

This is the second Novel by Dr. Soumeek Choudhury, an Assistant Professor of Forensic Medicine at the National Medical College, Kolkata. The time frame and the setting is the COVID pandemic.
Dr. Choudhary tells us the struggle of a middle class working Bengali couple in their day to day life as also the death of their first born and problems faced by both of them, in their own separate worlds, as a result of this. The crux of the story is a well-researched case of poisoning by ethylene glycol, which lead to the death of their first born child.
The boring, but steadfast husband Aritra, who is madly in love with his wife, Tyasha. Tyasha, the stunning beauty, who cheats on her husband for Zayed, a person who preys on women to fulfill both his financial and sexual needs. Tyasha’s mother-in-law, who has no love for her daughter-in-law – form one half of the characters in the story; while Dr Ryan Ray the Forensic Expert, Dr Analva Choudhury, the genetic expert & Aditi Bose, the Defense Lawyer, form the other half of the characters of this murder mystery. The depiction of their personal and private lives and their interplay in the whole story has been accomplished in a succinct and lucid manner.
The court room drama, the tirade between the expert witness and the defense counsel, the video-conferencing for showing laboratory tests, etc. have all been incorporated to keep the interest of the reader glued to the text.
The second phase of the story, with the birth of the second child of the couple, the episode of poisoning of the second child too with ethylene glycol and the twists and turns thereof, are not to be missed. The final part of the story, an email, is the anticlimax and hits you hard. Though you might think, ‘yes of course…why did I not think so.....,’ this really makes you wonder about the depths, a human mind can go to, for revenge!!
Of course, there are certain technical terms, which could have been explained as a separate table, but that’s OK in today’s world of Google.
All in all, it is a very well written, well researched novel about a poisoning case, with the Forensic Expert as the main protagonist. No ifs and buts; just pure science and its acceptance by the court in deciding the case.
A must read for those who love murder thrillers and court dramas.

Read Silent Execution by Dr Soumik Chowdhury

Soumik Chowdhury has already established himself as master story teller and silently executed our minds to his literary works .I am wondering how to describe and how to tell such a unique creation. Is it a thriller or detective or science fiction? A totally new style and having foundation of science in criminal investigation .There is no detective but a new face who is very close to us Dr Ryan Roy a forensic expert who proved forensic eyes are deep and penetrating
A young couple Tyasha and Aritra is fighting against all odds and have a sweet baby suddenly their life changed as the baby dies a suspicious death and after autopsy by Ryan Roy diagnosis of ethylene glycol poisoning came and Tyasha has been labeled as murderer of her own baby one can understand how pathetic it is.
Then court procedure where a brilliant arguments framed by her lawyer Aditi and battle of science started,I shall not tell more as it’s a heinous act to forecast the conclusion of such a novel story. With science on both sides, will truth win in the end or will it end up as the silent execution?
Being associated with forensic medicine for more than 40 years I have no hesitation to say Dr Ryan is my idol he conquered my heart I being a lazy reader finished the book in single stretch and the resonance lasted for long time ,I am very happy that not only our discipline Forensic medicine is glamorized but a new era has come in the series of novels it’s something different.Literature world got a new moon Dr Ryan Roy and his creator Dr Soumik Chowdhury
I wish Soumik all the success and waiting eagerly for the next episode of Ryan Roy it proved the words of my revered teacher Prof J.B.Mukherjee who use to tell when all subject ends forensic begins .

Howz murder for an experiment?

One needs courage , conviction and imagination to produce a well-crafted thriller in his debut fiction. This is exactly what Soumeek Chowdhuri has achieved in his recent work Howz murder for an experiment?

This genre of fiction has seen the myriad of ideas and investigative ventures to explore the dark side of life. Many a themes have been touched,Actions, plot and twists have been generated by authors to keep their readers enthralled . Crime, death, gruesome murders getting solved at the end makes excellent reading.

Scientific investigation of death has been appealing to both authors and readers.the dead body speaks the blatant truth: goes the old maxim. All one needs is the training ,skill, and scientific bent of mind to take the challenges head on. This happens in Soumeeks fiction Howz murder for an experiment? where three deaths , by different means yet so closely entangled, is an intrigue. It is deftly investigated by an officer with the help of young forensic pathologist Dr Ryan Ray

The story line goes meandering from one case to another when a research institute grapples with deaths of its staff, student and scientists is succession . How are those deaths linked? What makes a killer? Can police unravel the mystery? These questions haunt the reader.

One comes to know the truth; what goes in the name of research; trial of drugs, spinning of capital, the dizzy craving for fame, money and human weakness.

Far away from the madding metropolis, the action takes place at a medical research institute in a district town. The police seek the help of a forensic medicine expert to solve a series of deaths that seemed isolated . We come across characters brimming with life, real, down to earth with their own follies and foibles. Soumeek portrays them with great care and versatility.

The reader is taken across the labyrinth of a research institute, its researchers, the inmates of a closed campus, the grey areas of clinical trial, human failure and above all the mind that stealthily nurtures the evil. The evil mind leads to the evil act : crime.

The author does justice to all the characters, so real, so pragmatic so natural with their dilemma and disillusionments.

Dr Ryan, the protagonist, views the things around him with the detachment of scientist, passion of a poet and the worship of a staunch devotee.

The reviewer found the book amazing. It made compelling read;just un-putdownable. One whizzes past from one chapter to the next. Soumeek’s language is lucid, engrossing and fast moving . His prose often blurring the boundaries of time , making the narrative multi layered

The author paints the murky side of human greed, the craving for success and the disregard for values. To Ryan , the young forensic pathologist, death remained a saga to explore,,truth to unearth and a commitment to fulfill. He seems existentialist when he says “ We all die whether we are successful or not”

Its true for the doctor who delves deep in the ocean of death , the macabre, the putrid, the horrific yet so true .Only death can teach us to worship life. This reviewer from his experience and expertise can identify with the protagonist Ryan Ray . Well done Soumeek .

The book having well conceived cover design and quality binding makes handy reading too. Only for a few typos and formatting that may be corrected in the next edition. Wishing more from the author on the subject that is close to his expertise .

A review of Howz murder for an experiment by Dr Soumeek Chowdhuri

He didn't set it up in the backdrop of a big cosmopolis. Kolkata could have been an easy choice for him. The chosen locale is more on the fringes of  rural Bengal, similar to where I have worked for 3 decades, and where the author grew up, did his schooling, and which is home to India's oldest and the largest IIT campus that is all of 2100+ acres. Many locational descriptions in the novel are all too familiar, including restaurant surroundings, names and the granular details. That draws the reader closer, and a cardiac connection is created.
Even the popular swanky (by local standards) Cafe is not missed. Conspicuously present in all its pomp & glory. Very warm, as a mingling space.

The lyrical canvas  of the lush locales painted by Soumeek brought back magical memories of mine having spent nearly my entire career on such a campus.

Folks, I am writing about a debut novel by a young gentleman who is a trained physician academic.
Here goes my brief informal review of Howz murder for an experiment ? by Dr Soumeek Chowdhuri.

I loved the web of suspense, character building, and the convergence of those many threads of narratives that get sewn in a novel - particularly the first two-third of the book. It didn't at all feel like a debut novel to tell you the truth, mature structure, language, quite intriguing and absorbing, very aptly technical which came naturally to the author, himself being a medicine man, also specialised in forensic medicine.

What goes on in a medical research institute makes for an enthralling narrative, which Soumeek delineates with a Robin Cook-ish demeanor, a medical crime thriller par excellence - not at a racing pace, unlike many of those popular western thrillers, but more with the intellectual fervour, a food for thought mostly, may be with a bit of Feluda's magajastra.

Multiple murders very deftly entangled in the storyline brings the element of breathlessness for the reader, the forensic pathologist, Dr Ryan Roy, the protagonist and probably a bit of an autobiographical scaffold of the author himself, is a sharp charming analyst. As the reading progresses, he becomes quite endearing, and stays as the focal point of the reader's attention.

The current attention of common folks to the scientific complexity of drug trials in the context of Covid Vaccines, how they are implemented, duration, efficacies thereof, all that gel very well with what we encounter in this thriller, ethics or the lack of it will hold centrestage of this labyrinth and intrigue, masterminded by a few individuals with clear and present criminal intent. The more recent corruption and criminal plans regarding vaccination in our own state is a further pointer that the reader might find relevant in this novel.

On the flip side, the editing should have been better and more careful, to save those often occurring spelling, formatting and grammatical woes. Hopefully these will be taken care of in another edition or print.

All in all, a very commendable debut novel of a doctor professor with a master's degree whose passion is writing. Well crafted, a fairly intense suspense immersed work, definitely worth a read. Go ahead, grab your copy.
